Isang Litrong Liwanag (A Liter of Light) is a project of MyShelter Foundation of Illac Diaz in cooperation with Elmer Francisco more particularly for Mindanao operations. The project aims to install 1 million Solar Bottle Bulbs within 2012 which is well within reach. Solar Bottle Bulbs were developed by the students of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under Appropriate Technology.
Appropriate Technology has three major factors namely:
1. Materials and Tools are easy to source.
-Materials
>1.5L Plastic Bottle
>9″x11″ Corrugated Galvanized Iron
>Purified Water
>Bleach
>Rubber Sealant
>Rivets
-Tools
>Metal Cutter
>Hammer
>Nail
>Riveter
2. Product would easily be replicated at a very low cost.
-A Solar Bottle Bulb could be made for only US$1.00 or Php50.00.
3. We could make ourselves obsolete.
-We could teach the technology to people and once they have mastered the process, they could do it on their own.
With this simple piece of technology, we can give light (equivalent to 55-60Watts) to the poorest of the poor which is good for at least 5 years wherein they would not even have to use electricity. It spells savings of around Php200 to Php500 per month.
This project also helps mitigate climate change as it reduces the use of electricity, it recycles empty plastic bottle of which it prevents these plastic bottles from being burnt in dumpsites or from clogging drainage systems; thus, turning it into something very useful such as a Solar Bottle Bulb.
Another benefit of this project aside from climate change mitigation is that it could also be a livelihood project which could help uplift the lives of marginalized people.
